Abstract

This research focus on a preliminary study to identify opportunities, challenges, implications of supply chain manangement and how they can be influenced as the contribution for supply chain management research in supporting circular economy. Circular economy as a circular model of production known economically to overcome the shortcomings of traditional linear operating models. Academic literature in circular economy is relatively new but still lack of attention in its implications for supply chain management. This article presents a preliminary proposition regarding the implications for the development of a 'circular supply chain' which is defined as the embodiment of circular economic principles in supply chain management.  Propositions are based on the following arguments: a) transformation from product ownership to leasing related to supply chain; b) The relevance of structural flexibility and start-up in regional or local scope; c) material scope both in open and closed area in the technical and biological cycles; d) Good collaboration between both inside and outside of industry boundaries; and e) Public and private procurement in service industry. This article also discuss the meaning of circular economic principles in terms of supply chain challenges and conclude with limitations and further research.
